Tax-Aide provides free tax preparation help to people with low to moderate incomes from February 1 to April 15. Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service in the United States, giving special attention to people over age 60.
Volunteer Opportunities
Tax Aid Counselor: Over 32,000 specially trained volunteer tax specialists at over 7,000 sites nationwide, help taxpayers obtain all the tax deductions and credits they’re entitled to -
- Duties: Prepared tax forms and/or answers questions to the extent of his/her current tax training, at assigned counseling sites. Explains tax returns prepared to clients as the client is responsible for the accuracy of the return. Adheres to site schedules and guidelines, accepts no money or other gratuity for services. Maintains the strict confidentiality and protects the security of all taxpayer information and records at all times. Notifies the AARP Tax-Aide National Office, 1-800-424-2277, extension 6027, within 24 hours if any computer with taxpayer data has been lost or stolen or of any other incident which causes the volunteer to believe that confidentiality of the data has been compromised. Promotes and supports the AARP Tax-Aide program through word-of-mouth, ensures sites are well identified by Ay AARP Tax-Aide posters and banners, and wears an AARP Tax-Aide name badge while serving at the site. Records all assistance given on the Site Sign-in Sheet. Works well with diverse populations.
- Time Commitment: Counselors must volunteer an average of four hours per week from Feb 1 through April 15 plus a 3 – 5 day training period in January.
