    1. Operation Toasty Toes @ Silvermont Opportuntiy Center
      10:00 am – 11:00 am

      Operation Toasty Toes, makes handcrafted (knitted or Crocheted) items for our troops abroad. This act of love sends a much needed message of support. Volunteers through the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) meet monthly to work on items, help each other with patterns and socialize. Yarn and patterns are provided. Volunteers can join our RSVP group or work from home and drop off items at Silvermont Opportuntiy Center as needed.

      Skills: Volunteer are needed that can knit, crochet or use a loom knitter to make comfort items for the troops.Volunteers need to have a basic knowledge of Knitting or crocheting.

      Times: Volunteers can work at home or join our Toasty Toes Group at Silvermont Senior Opportunity in Brevard on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 10-11am

      Training: Volunteers are provided with yarn and patterns and an orientation to RSVP and Operation Toasty Toes. Unfortunately due to time restraints our coordinator is not able to provide lessons in knitting or crochet.

      Getting Started: Volunteer complete a RSVP application form, they do not need a background check or references.

      Age Requirements: Volunteer need to be age 55 or better to be involved.

      Volunteer Fair Poster Brevard

      The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in partnership with the United Way of Transylvania County is proud to sponsor the “Get Connected” Volunteer Fair to be held at the Transylvania County Public Library Rogow Room on June 6th from 10-2pm.

      The “Get Connected” Volunteer Fair is a way for community non-profits and service organizations to showcase their work and their need for volunteers. It is also a way for those who desire to serve and volunteer to explore opportunities and talk with representatives in a casual atmosphere.

      For non-profit and governmental agencies interested in participating in this free event please download, print and complete the registration form and return it to our office. Registration Form-Get Connected June 6-2013

    1. Break the Hunger Food Drive @ Carolina Furniture Concepts
      5:00 am – 8:00 pm
      Join News 13, Carolina Furniture Concepts and Two Men & A Truck for the first ever Break the Hunger, a food drive to ensure underprivileged kids eat during Summer Break. Bring non-perishable food items to Carolina Furniture Concepts in Arden or Waynesville between 4:30AM to 7PM, Friday June 7th. We’ll be out their collecting canned goods, formula, rice and other non-perishables! We can also take in other essential items like diapers, toothpaste & toilet paper. All the items donated will go to Children First/Communities in Schools who will then distribute the food and items to children who normally get free or assisted lunch during the school year. The need is great, as one out of every four children is at risk of hunger in Buncombe County. Help us break the hunger for children who would otherwise be underfed during the summer months!
      Want to Volunteer to Help
      children1st_250x100Volunteers are needed to assist with the food drive. If interested please contact Jodi Ford at Children’s First at 828-768-2072 Jodif@childrenfirstbc.org.  3-6 volunteers are needed per 3 hour shift from 5:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m. The duties include accepting donations of food and personal care items, light sorting, and handing out  of donation receipts . These activities would be suitable for middle-school to college age students to older adults.

      AARP Drivers ClassCars have changed. So have the traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver’s licenses, but even the most experienced benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.

      What Will I Learn
      current rules of the road • defensive driving techniques • operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment • accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and  reaction time.
